Maine Police Charge South Portland Man with Possessing Stolen Handguns
A South Portland man was taken into custody Friday night after a routine traffic stop in Portland led to the discovery of two stolen handguns, according to Maine State Police.
According to Maine Department of Public Safety press release, the incident occurred around 9 p.m. on October 17 along Skyway Drive. A Trooper with Troop I stopped a vehicle for a defective taillight and identified the driver as 29-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamud, who is also the registered owner of the vehicle.
During the stop, Troopers learned that Mohamud was out on bail under strict conditions. He was prohibited from possessing dangerous weapons and restricted from being outside between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. A search of the car revealed two firearms reported stolen, leading to his immediate arrest.
Mohamud faces charges of Violation of Conditions of Release and Receiving Stolen Property. He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail to await further processing.
State Police emphasized that this is an ongoing investigation. Authorities did not release additional details, and they are asking anyone with information related to the case to contact Troop I.
The arrest underscores the role of routine traffic enforcement in uncovering serious criminal activity, according to law enforcement officials, and serves as a reminder of the strict bail conditions often imposed in cases involving weapons or prior criminal history.
