Massive Fire, Seen For Miles Around, Breaks Out at Popular Boothbay Harbor Hotel
According to WGME 13, an absolutely gargantuan fire broke out at a very popular Boothbay Harbor Hotel on Lakeview Road on Monday night.
Officials report that the hotel is a total loss following the blaze that could be seen for miles around, including from some islands off the coast.
The hotel, Beach Cove Waterfront Inn, was still being watched by fire crews for 'hot spots' as of Tuesday morning WGME reports.
During the blaze, first responders and nearby residents reported hearing explosions that sounded like 'jumbo jets' coming from the inn.
Nick Upham, the Boothbay Harbor Fire Chief, told WGME news 13 in part,
“As hot as it was the heat was coming back and starting to ignite the other buildings. We had fire spreading into the woods probably an eighth of the mile down the woods that way, buildings along here that are actually melted.”
The chief also went on to say that the fire was so hot and intense that it was melting the siding on nearby homes. Additionally, as of Tuesday morning, there was still no word on exactly what caused the fire.
CMP was still reporting thousands of customers without power in Boothbay Harbor and surrounding areas. At last check, crews were responding to the area to begin the process of restoring power.
This is a developing story and we will keep it updated as more information comes in throughout the day and coming weeks.
