Netflix Show Follows Maine Woman Who Ate Her Boogers to Survive
Recently I have been binge watching, "Alone". It's a series that has been gaining a lot of traction and a Maine woman from Cherryfield was featured on the show.
Give me a person, alone, in the Alaskan wilderness, surrounded by grizzly bears, hunting, gathering, and starving any day and I am hooked.
The show featured a Maine woman and she was super interesting. Her name is Michelle Finn.
Watching a show, comfortably in your own home, eating popcorn and witnessing starvation is what I'd like to call a fun Tuesday.
According to History, she is an educational consult that raised on the Maine coast, where she loved being in the wilderness exploring.
Let me set the scene. Michelle had been foraging for weeks and only coming up with little things like berries and plants to eat but nothing to fully sustain her.
At one point she mentioned that her salt intake was very low and when that happens it's bad.
The human body can't live without some sodium. It's needed to transmit nerve impulses, contract and relax muscle fibers (including those in the heart and blood vessels), and maintain a proper fluid balance.
So Michelle had an idea that is gross but also very intelligent. When you're out in the wilderness and are starving you do anything to make sure you survive. Michelle knew that she was low on sodium and because you can't survive without it, she started to eat her boogers.
That's right, her boogers. Because your mucus contains sugar. Let's be honest, she's a booger genius.
This type of survival behavior makes me want to watch this show more.
Unfortunately, due to Michelle's depletion of nutrients and calories, her health was declining and had to "tap out" of the show.
But she will remain my booger hero, forever.
