A wanted man was injured after allegedly firing at law enforcement during a multi-town chase that ended in Augusta Sunday, according to the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say the incident began when Deputy Elijah Curtis attempted to stop a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Dustin Smith on Hallowell Road in Chelsea. Authorities say Smith was wanted on multiple felony warrants at the time.

According to WGME 13,, Smith refused to stop, leading officers on a chase through Chelsea, Windsor, and eventually into Augusta. Deputy Jeffrey Boudreau joined the pursuit as it continued across several communities.

During the chase, WGME says Smith fired a gun at law enforcement multiple times. The pursuit ended on Allen Street in Augusta, where deputies say Smith stopped his vehicle, opened the door, and pointed a firearm at officers.

Deputies Curtis and Boudreau then fired their weapons, striking Smith. the news station reported that one bullet grazed him. Smith was taken into custody at the scene, along with 29-year-old Kierra Stoddard, who deputies say resisted arrest.

Smith was transported to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where he was treated for his injury and later released. Both Smith and Stoddard were then taken to the Kennebec County Correctional Facility.

Stoddard was charged with resisting arrest, while Smith faces multiple charges that are still pending.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings, Deputies Curtis and Boudreau have been placed on administrative leave. The Office of the Maine Attorney General is investigating the use of deadly force in the incident.
