Authorities say the accident occurred Sunday night after a day of riding. According to News Center Maine, 56-year-old Steven K Allard and his wife, Tiffany, both from New Hampshire, had just returned to Jackman on Sunday evening after a day of riding. Tiffany had decided to call it a day while Steven wanted to go back out one more time.

After not returning for quite some time, Maine Game Wardens went out searching. They were able to locate his tracks on Moosehead Lake and follow them back near the mouth of the Moose River, a spot infamous for its unstable and often thin ice.

Allard's body was recovered from the water at about 10:15 Sunday night, a few hundred yards from shore. He was taken to the hospital in Greenville and pronounced dead.
