If you've ever been a kid (if you haven't, we want to talk to you!), you've probably had at least a few Dum Dums in your life.

The small, round, suckers have been around since 1924.  The current flavor line-up includes: cherry, cotton candy, bubblegum, grape, butterscotch, orange, and...  MYSTERY FLAVOR.  What is it?  Butterscotch-pineapple?  Grape-cherry? Cotton candy - orange?

Thanks to The Kitchen, we have the answer!  Since time is money, instead of shutting the machines down between batches, they just keep it running.  So, the mystery flavor is actually a mixture of the end of the last batch and the beginning of the next batch.  So, in theory, no two "mystery flavors" are exactly the same.

Honestly, it's really a story of making lemonade out of lemons.  Taking what is really a by-product of the manufacturing process and marketing it as something completely different.

It kind of reminds me of how Henry Ford invented charcoal briqettes as a way to make money off the wood scraps from the manufacture of his Model Ts.  No, really, it's true.  Read the story HERE.
