If you were anywhere near social media yesterday, you undoubtedly saw someone posting, or sharing a post, about some kind of incident at the Wal Mart in The Elm City.

As you might imagine, there were many different explanations for the large police and fire presence at the large retailer. Some people were speculating an altercation involving relationship drama between employees.

Some folks on Facebook were even saying that there was an active shooter inside the store. Others speculated that someone was inside attempting to take their own life. And, as typically happens on social media, the truth is somewhere buried in the middle.

Now that the proverbial dust has settled, we now know what actually happened yesterday inside the Waterville store. According to an article published by the Kennebec Journal, Waterville Police & Fire responded to the Wal Mart store just before 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

What did officials find inside the store?

Upon their arrival, all employees and customers were swiftly evacuated to the parking lot. Police entered the store and found a subject suffering self-inflicted wounds to the neck area.

Officials were able to render aid on scene while simultaneously preparing the injured for transport. The injured man was then taken from the scene and taken to an area hospital for prompt treatment.

How serious were the injuries to the victim?

The Kennebec Journal reported that the man was suffering from serious, though likely not life-threatening, self-sustained injuries.

A Cornville, Maine woman who was getting her haircut in the store when the evacuation was ordered said in part,

“I had a cape on and couldn’t get it off. I had no idea what was going on. I’ve never had anything like that happen here. I was scared because of everything going on with the world, everything happening with the president getting back in office. I was not sure if there was an invasion or something.”

Waterville police Maj. Jason Longley said in part to the Kennebec Journal,

“Due to the quick work of our first responders to secure the scene and render aid, the patient was provided immediate lifesaving care. The high level of training and proficiency displayed by everyone on scene was an incredible thing to witness.”
