Having been in Augusta radio broadcasting most of my adult life, I've heard it all..."Armpit," "Disgusta," you name it. Frankly I'm tired of it as I have been here long enough to see this city grow from a little less desirable area to thrive to something I'm quite proud to be involved with. I'm talking about the whole city, from the council, the mayor and manager, to citizens who actually take pride in where they live rather than pot shots.

The fact is, we have a lot going on in this city. A lot of great people. Tons of desirable businesses, from mom and pop shops to big box stores. They all have a place and people from here and everywhere flock to them. The big box stores can actually help small businesses. They draw people into our city and down our streets (don't get me started on the roads). The problem is, and this isn't new but it just came to light, many people are turned off by things downtown.

New business is coming to downtown...quality businesses. Like the newly reopened Vickery Cafe, Riverfront Barbecue and Gin Mill, Downtown Diner, Stacy's, to name a few. Plus, downtown had been getting a new paint job...a sprucing up. Market Square is being updated. So what's the problem?

According to a KJ article, vagrants, panhandlers and vandals are a big part of it. One "person" defecated downtown recently. If you WEREN'T aware, now you are. So, what can be done, legally? That's the $20,000 question. Obviously, some of the activity is illegal and can be addressed. Other activities like loitering, panhandling and the like, are a little more of a gray area.

Hey...downtown Augusta is too good to miss...and it's getting better. But people won't come if they feel threatened. So, ideas?

City Manager Bill Bridgeo and Mayor Bill Stokes are friends of mine. They have the city's best interests at heart. So does downtown manager, Steve Pecukonis. I implore you, rather than toss insults and further compound the problem, offer solutions here or on our Facebook page. They ARE interested in what you have to say, especially if it will better our already wonderful community!
