Several Augusta Upgrades Aimed at Improving Pedestrian Safety in The City
In a Facebook post by the Augusta Downtown Alliance and subsequently shared by the Augusta Police Department and Cyclists and Pedestrians Invigorating Augusta Life's Facebook page, highlight some major enhancements to city streets and crosswalks.
In recent months there have been several incidents, some fatal, involving pedestrians within the Augusta city limits. These new projects have a goal of making drivers more aware of pedestrians and pedestrians more aware of vehicles. In several photos shared by the community groups you can see portions of the crosswalks being painted red and white to help enhance visibility as well as tall white poles to guide pedestrians into the crosswalks and stop them before walking into traffic without looking.
As drivers, we should always be doing our best to pay attention to pedestrians everywhere that we drive. Especially here in a busy city like Augusta. Big shout out to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine who helped make these much-needed improvements become a reality. Stay safe!
