There is just one moon, but it goes by many different names! For example, we have the buck moon, pink moon, worm moon, hunter moon, flower moon, beaver moon, and the list goes on.

In Maine, last night provided us with the special moment to witness the Wolf Moon. But it was quick because of the clouds.

What is the Wolf Moon?

The January full moon earns this name due to the increased activity of wolves during this season, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Wolfs are so interesting to me. Their howls echoing on cold nights. The origin of the name lies in the Sioux language, where it is described as the "wolves run together" moon.

Dave Dostie, a prominent local photographer, took a photo of the full Wolf Moon that left me breathless.

Dave shared this with his audience, and it was a sight to behold! Anticipating that the clouds might obstruct the view of the rising full moon around 4:30 last night, Dave noticed a large, distinct gap higher up off the horizon, offering a potential glimpse.

On the way home, he made the decision to pull into a gas station and wait for a couple of minutes. In a brief yet magical moment, the moon appeared unobstructed, resting upon the cloud shelf before quickly disappearing into the night sky.

Dave was determined to capture the full moon, and he did a great job.
