Maine Community Group Reports Surge in Coyote & Bobcat Daytime Sightings
I know what you’re thinking: “We’re in Maine, of course we’re going to see and hear bobcats and coyotes!”
You’re right. But recently, one Maine town has seen more during the day than usual. The Greene Village Facebook Group has actively spotted coyotes and bobcats, and are sharing the animals' locations with residents.
My mom lives in this beautiful village of Greene in Maine, and she told me the other day that neighbors are a little more worried then usual. They are apprehensive, and extra cautious with their smaller pets. We are all used to having wild animals in Maine, but sometimes, you need to level up your protection.
Mom told me that after coyotes have caught and eaten a meal, they "celebrate." Meaning, they start howling. Loudly.
And it's not just happening in Greene.
One resident in Burnham reported that she saw a coyote hunting a fawn on her uncle's lawn in the middle of the day.
If you are out and about in Maine and come face-to-face with coyote or bobcat, here is what you should do, according to Martha Stewart, KGW News, and the Burbank Police Department:
BOBCATS
Slowly back away and act larger than you are. At the same time, make very loud noises. Spraying the animal with water can also help it back off. Although attacks on humans are rare, if a bobcat does attack, defend yourself and fight as hard as you can. And of course, seek emergency assistance immediately.
COYOTES
Both ways to handle these animals are very similar.
If you have seen a higher number of these wild animals in your town, let us know, and always make sure to protect your pets and stay cautious.
