Urgent Alert: Extreme Mosquito Virus Detected in Orono, Maine
I think we all know by now that the most dangerous bug in our state is the dreaded mosquito, also known as the "mozzie."
One of the only benefits of living in Maine is that during the cold winter months, these annoying bugs are pretty much non-existent. Mosquitos carry terrible diseases that have been known to kill people.
According to research from Pfizer, more than 700,000 people die every year from diseases carried and transmitted by mosquitos.
According to WABI, one of these terrible mosquito-born viruses known as Jamestown Canyon Virus has been detected in Maine, according to the CDC. This was made public by a notice from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

This virus can be found in the United States as far south as Georgia, according to the CDC.
An article was put out by WABI, stating that this virus was recently identified in a mosquito sample, increasing public health concerns.
What are the symptoms of the virus?
The Jamestown Canyon Virus include headaches, fever, fatigue, and can lead to even more severe conditions. This virus "can cause severe disease and even death, but it's very rare", according to New Jersey.gov.
How does this transmit?
This occurs through mosquito bites!
To prevent this, it's good to take precautionary measures. Use bug spray, wear long sleeves, and grab products designed to keep insects away, such as those from Pickles Potions and Lotions in Winthrop. Their products are highly effective in preventing bites, and even offer solutions for brown-tail moths.
