Whenever taking to the vast Maine wilderness you should always be prepared for anything to go wrong. Even if that 'something' is not being able to find the trailhead when it's time to descend back down the mountain after enjoying a rest at the summit.

According to WMTW, a family from New Jersey was hiking Maine's popular Tumbledown Mountain in Weld on Saturday when they became disoriented at the top. After making it to the summit the family was preparing to descend back down the mountain when they lost track of where the trail entrance was. Reports indicate that the snow and ice at the top of the mountain hindered them from being able to easily see where the trail started.

The out-of-state family placed a call to 911 (thankfully there was cellphone service) at around 7 PM Saturday evening. Following the call for help, the Maine Warden Service did what they do best. They jumped into action and headed for the woods at nightfall.

Upon reaching the family, Wardens lit a fire so that the stranded hikers could warm up before starting their way down in the dark. WMTW reports that the group made it back down to the base at around midnight Saturday night.

The Maine Warden Service is using this situation as a reminder to always plan ahead for any scenario, especially for snow and ice during early-season Maine hikes. Fortunately for this family, no injuries were reported and we're glad they're safe!
