My wife Nelly and I journeyed to the Auburn Wal Mart last night to grab some paint for our porch renovation and what unfolded was something I felt compelled to share, along with some helpful insights for those who may be unfamiliar with the self-checkout machines. As a mom, I'm also inclined to be a bit of a teacher.

Dear Young Man,

I noticed that you didn't quite grasp the concept of "bank notes" equaling money at the self-checkout, huh? I witnessed that your obvious frustration when you read the word "NOTES" on the self-check out machine.

That particular label shows the location where you have to insert your cash.

Fear not, you're not alone; those sneaky ATMs can be quite...sneaky. But hey, in your defense, money does come in all sorts of funky shapes and sizes these days.

A long time ago, in like the 14th century, the phrase "bank notes" came from the notes of the bank originally recognized "the right of the holder of the note to collect the precious metal (gold or silver) deposited with a banker", according to Wikipedia.

There are moments when I find myself getting frustrated with machines and technology, and it might seem a bit silly. But in those circumstance, I turn to my 7-year-old, and he's there to fill me in.

It's a beautiful example of older generations passing down their knowledge to the younger ones. It just goes to show that we can all learn from each other, regardless of our age.

Love,
