PICS: Take an Exclusive Look Inside Augusta, Maine’s New $20 Million Police Station
The completion of a project that began nearly two years ago has many of Augusta's residents and police officers alike excited about the final product. Augusta, Maine's brand spankin' new $20,500,000.00 police station is finally done. All that's left to do is move in.
Yesterday, for about two hours, the brand new police station was open to the public so that the people who actually paid for the building could stop by and check it out. In addition to the hundreds of citizens, current and former Augusta officers and boat loads of TV media and city officials, our very own Cooper Fox was there to check it all out and grab some one-time-only photos of the inside.
The front of the new station, located on Willow Street across from the old City Hall, features an absolutely beautiful stone and glass entryway that leads into a wicked-big lobby area. Once the police station is open, this is about as far as the general public will be able to go.
In addition to all the other cool new features, the new building also has a two-bay sally port. This is where cruisers will enter the station if they have a suspect in custody that needs to be interviews and/or booked. However, the new police station doesn't actually have any cells. That's because of the building's close proximity to the Kennebec County Jail, the Kennebec Journal reported.
The new police station, which will be moved into by the department in the coming weeks, will replace the existing Union Street station that they have been working out out of since 1995.
If you didn't get a look at the new digs yesterday, the only way you're going to see much of it now is by committing an arrestable offense, which we don't really advise.
