Traffic Jams & Turkeys: Thousands Show up For Meals in Augusta
If you noticed some insane gridlock traffic in Augusta yesterday, you certainly weren't alone. Traffic was at a standstill down Mt Vernon Ave, Townsend Ave, Civic Center Drive, Anthony Ave and even the interstate off ramps at exit 112. But, it wasn't because of a traffic accident or anything like that- no, it was all for a wonderful cause.
According to the Kennebec Journal, more than 2,000 people showed up for the Augusta Food Bank's Farm-to-Family Feast distribution that occurred yesterday morning at the Civic Center. This is an event that we here at 92 Moose have been talking about recently to make sure the word got out. Though I'm not sure that even we knew just how big this turnout was going to be.
Yesterday morning after the Moose Morning Show, Renee and I decided that we were going to run up to Sam's Club to shoot a quick promotional video for next week's Camp Out Hunger, but we never made it that far. Once we encountered the traffic jams in the city's North side, we decided it would be much more beneficial to our audience to cover the happenings with the food distribution.
Sure, the traffic was a little frustrating for some, but I would ask you to remember that this was happening so that people who may not have had enough to eat for Thanksgiving have a little extra on their table this year, and that is invaluable. I would wait in traffic for years if it meant no one was hungry.
As a matter of fact, one of the biggest takeaways for me yesterday was seeing all the cars waiting to turn into the Civic Center and realizing just how MASSIVE the food insecurity problem in our own community is. This has made Camp Out Hunger even MORE important to me than it already was. I hope you can come out and support area food banks and the Salvation Army next week. Drop off your non-perishable foods and/or monetary donations at the Sam's Club parking lot between Tuesday & Saturday. We're there around the clock so pop in anytime!
Here's a video from yesterday to show you just how crazy the scene really was!
