It Turns Out I’ve Been Committing a Jailable Offense For a While
I've never really considered myself much of a 'bad boy', but that all changed this morning for me. It turns out I'm a bit of a rebel, a culprit, a fugitive, an offender.. a hooligan if you will.
You see, when it comes to things that I want to do with my day, driving over to the Maine Department of Motor Vehicles and taking a number to wait to renew my driver's license isn't high on the list. Nothing against the DMV, this has more to do with my inherent laziness than it does the M-DMV. And no, I can't renew online because I have a class A commercial license with endorsements.
With that being said, my driver's license (cue Olivia Rodrigo.. just kidding, please don't) expired on my birthday. That birthday was back on October 17, 2020. So I guess what I'm saying is that it has been about six months since I've had a non-expired driver's license. Honestly, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. I kind of looked at it like I do the date on a jug of milk. It's just there as a guideline about when you should think about getting a new jug.
As fate would have it, officer Brad Chase of the Augusta Police Department just happened to be in the building this morning and I was able to ask him about this. To my ignorant surprise, after 90 days of expiration, you are committing a class E misdemeanor which is punishable by up to a $1,000 fine and 180 days in freaking jail! So, long story short, I'm headed to the DMV TODAY to get this taken care of. I just hope I don't get pulled over on the way because I'll definitely get arrested.
