I would start by saying that every year is an important year to give back to the Salvation Army, though this year is a little bit different.

As with everything else that's been affected by the multi-year COVID pandemic, the donations to the Salvation Army have also dwindled.

The Red Kettle campaign is a yearly fundraising tradition for Salvation Army chapters all across the United States, and there are some common misconceptions that go along with it.

For starters, many people believe that the Red Kettle campaign is just for holiday support. Meaning that people think their donations during the Christmas season are specifically going JUST to holiday help efforts. This is simply not true.

The Red Kettle campaign is a money drive that is used to support our local chapter ALL YEAR LONG. The money raised through the kettles will go on to not only help buy gift for kids this Christmas, but also to boost other programs like rental assistance, heating assistance and food services.

Another thing many don't realize is that each individual Salvation Army chapter, like the Capital Region that supports Kennebec County, is responsible for raising all their own funds for the year. The Salvation Army headquarters doesn't just dole out the money needed to all the chapters across the US each year. It just doesn't work that way.

So remember to carry a little extra cash on you this holiday while you're out and about doing your shopping and try to never pass by a red kettle without tossing a little something inside. And, don't forget, you also have the option to do a digital donation by scanning the QR code that's on top of every kettle!
