I work in Augusta and many of my friends and colleagues live in and around the capital of Maine, however, one article suggests that this vibrant city of ours, could be the worst?

Say what? Total disagree here.

While it is true that every city in the country has its own set of positives and negatives, it feels to me that it is unrealistic to expect any town to be absolutely perfect or completely devoid of drawbacks.

However, when we talk about the "worst" city to live in, what exactly defines such a classification?

Well, Money Inc recently published a list ranking the top 20 worst places to live in Maine, starting from #20 with Portland and ending with the top-ranked city, Augusta.

Here are four other cities that were listed in the top 5:

  • Gardiner
  • Rockland
  • Calais
  • Presque Isle

Let's dive into this negative assessment and find out what contributes to this city being referred to as "the worst" to live in here in Maine.

Why is Augusta rated "The Worst?"

  • High Crime Rate
  • Low Salary
  • High Unemployment rate

According to the article, the city is the 2nd most dangerous in the state of Maine. Which poses a significant risk of becoming a victim to a crime. People of Augusta face a 1 in 30 chance of experiencing a robbery.

Another reason listed is the low salary. Out of the over 18,000 residents, the average salary is $142,000. In addition, the unemployment rate is at a high 6.2%.

That just about sums up the reasons behind the city's low rating.

However, it is important to note that the opinion expressed does not reflect my view of Augusta.

In truth, it is the people of Augusta who truly make this city remarkable, and the huge amount of good-hearted people here certainly outweigh the few who may not contribute positively.

And that's clearly only one list (plus who needs a list to tell them if their city is great or not?).

It's not hard to find other lists that show just how great Augusta is, too.

Usatales.com highlights the best places to live in Maine, and guess what? Augusta leads the top of that one, and the website, in part, attributes that ranking due to the median home price in Augusta being less than the median home value in the state and the fact it's just a beautiful city.

And let's be real. There are so many great things to do in Augusta, so don't let just one list deter you if you're considering coming to live in this location.

It's a pretty great place to be.
