Several Pairs of Underwear Were Just Discovered in The Walls of a Maine House During a Renovation
I am proud to present that we have uncovered the answer to the age-old question, Boxers or Briefs? Well, it's boxers.
A house in Lewiston, recently bought by my wife and I has proved to not only be old but also full of very interesting surprises. When you buy an old house you do tend to think of what you may find inside. Whether it's a treasure, old coins, money, or even bones, you imagine these things but no one expected what was found.
My contractor Kelly has found many unique treasures in the houses he's worked on however, this one was found by one of his workers, Jo Jo and it takes the cake! I wasn't there when the underwear in question was uncovered but I am assuming it went a little like this.
JoJo: Look what I found under there
Kelly: Under where?
JoJo: That's right!
A little back story about the time period of this house. I learned from the contractor that houses built during the time of the American Depression were created with many recyclable materials. The cost of materials was out of the question due to the crash of the market so builders had to get creative.
It was so bad he said, that when people were building houses they used whatever used materials they could find like pieces of wood, from old shipping crates for walls, recycled paper or wallpaper scraps for the inside of cabinets, and even ladies' nylons to hold nuts and bolts.
In this particular situation, cut-up pieces of rags, blankets, clothes, and even underwear were used to help insulate the walls as well as hush sounds that the old window weights would make.
JoJo was surprised when he pulled out a piece of what he thought was cloth but upon further inspection was an old pair of men's boxers cut up into pieces to fill in the wall.
I have learned so much from this job already and I am pleasantly surprised to know that all throughout my new house lay the secrets of the past.
I hope to find an old brassiere (bra) stuffed in the roof next!
