According to WCSH, US News & World Report has ranked Maine as the safest state in the nation.

Recently released state crime statistics show a decrease of 9.3% in 2018.  2018 was the seventh year in a row that crime rates have dropped.

However, while most types of crime decreased in 2018, the state did see an increase assaults and homicides.  There was a 4.7% increase in simple assaults.  9,927 reported in 2018 compared to 9,527 in 2017.  23 homicides were reported in 2018, compared to 21 in 2017.

The US News ranking is based on both violent and property crime data from 2017.  The second safest state was Vermont and the third was New Hampshire.  Clearly, you may a great choice living in New England.
