According to reports, Rhode Island has approved a measure that would cover the cost of tuition and fees for Rhode Island residents to attend the Community College of Rhode Island, regardless of their income.

The report said the new program, called the Promise Scholarship, will cost $2.8 million in its first year. Students must be enrolled full-time with at least a 2.5 GPA, earn 30 credits annually and be enrolled each semester for two years to take advantage of the scholarship.

In addition to Rhode Island, New York, Oregon and Tennessee also offer free community college for residents. Should Maine be next?
