Maine Mom Remembers Loved Ones Through Baking During The Holidays
Mommy is Greek, so I am too! I am proud to know about my heritage. I wish I had more time with my Grandparents every day.
You don't realize how precious life is and how impactful people can be to you until they are no longer physically here. That's a downer, but it's also the truth.
I will also say that when you're young it is so important to listen to your grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older family members because of the wise guidance and direction they share.
When the holidays hit and you miss someone there is one thing that our family has found that makes it a bit easier to go on without them. In our tribe, we bake cookies.
They're called Kourabiedes and Well, Mommy mostly bakes them, and my wife, brother, and I taste test throughout her cooking session. We often get hollered at and told to, "Get out of my kitchen!"
However, the feeling your 5 senses receive when you are blasted in the past is always so tremendous. The house fills with the aroma of my Yia Yia, Greek for Grandmother, who was taught by her Mother, Magdelena Pappas, and who taught Mommy how to bake these cookies. The scent brings me to a place of love and remembrance.
Thank you to my Mom, personally, for teaching me about the importance of knowing where you are from and more importantly what you are capable of because of those who came before you.
